The young family who built this home in 2013 was looking for a comfortable nest to raise their two kids. Having spent considerable time in Japan, they brought a unique, Japanese-inpsired perspective to the project.
Situated on a quiet street within a tight-knit neighbourhood, the lot only allowed for 2,400 square feet on 3 floors. The main floor combines several functions into one area, with kitchen, living, dining, front entrance and powder room all packed into a mere 760 square feet. A pony wall provides a natural separation between the kitchen and living room and as a bonus, provides kid-height storage for the kitchen.
We carefully selected furniture to make the space feel ample. The airy interior incorporates a consistent palette of light, neutral finishes, including rift white oak panelling, polished concrete floors and ultra-white matte lacquer cabinets.
Upstairs skylights and high windows open up the space and access calming sky views. The custom louvered screen on the stair skylight creates interesting light patterns throughout the day.
The basement houses the media/playroom, sewing/craft room and home office for the owner who works remotely managing mountain resorts in Japan.
