This 2750 sq ft split-level dwelling is modern, spacious and open – a stark departure from the typical 1920’s bungalow that originally stood on this site. In the revitalized space, walnut floors and millwork bring warmth and interest, while accents of white stone and grey travertine and basalt throughout complete the palette. The material selection integrates the living spaces, creating a continuous sense of clean simplicity.
The owners had previously lived in a Gastown loft with wide-open spaces and high ceilings, a feel that they loved. But as a young family, they needed a home with separate spaces. The new home has the rooms they need, with the same high ceilings and lofty feeling that the owners loved in their old loft. The owners love entertaining friends and family, so an open floor plan with centralized kitchen was designed to accommodate both adults and kids in the same space while cooking and socializing. The kitchen flows onto a 2-level deck with BBQ and seating areas via a retractable eclipse door system, to extend the living space in the summer and shoulder seasons.
Millwork was designed with inset pulls throughout, keeping the hardware to a minimum. In the kitchen, a 36-inch subzero fridge is so seamlessly integrated into the millwork it is not much of a visual feature at all.
The split-level floor plan allows the couple’s two children to have their own zone with two bedrooms, a shared bathroom and a small family office area. The master bedroom and ensuite are up a half flight of stairs from the children’s rooms for privacy, and just steps away from a rooftop deck with mountain views.
Despite the relatively modest square footage, the home’s split-level construction lends it a sense of modular functionality. The basement accommodates a media room/guest room as well a self contained one bedroom rental suite. In short, this revitalized home truly satisfies the needs of a modern family in every way. We tried with the interiors to bring it even more decisively into a modern, relevant feel.
